This lithograph is built around Admiral George Dewey, the naval officer whose fleet destroyed the Spanish squadron at Manila Bay in 1898 and made him a national hero. By the time this poster was printed around 1916, Dewey was in his late seventies, and the title, "Good boy Dewey," signals a fond, patriotic tone toward a figure from an earlier war. The Uncle Sam figure in the subject list places the scene within the American war-effort imagery of World War I, when older heroes were often invoked to rally support. The print was copyrighted by M.L. Schleuter of Oakland, California.
