Titled "The Frenchwoman in war-time," this 1917 color lithograph is signed by G. Capon and shows women at the center of the French home front. Its catalog subjects point to two themes: women taking paid work in France while men served at the front, and mothers caring for children through the war. With France short of men by 1917, women filled jobs in factories, farms and offices, and posters like this one presented that work as patriotic service. The print also passed through the collection of Willard Dickerman Straight, the American diplomat who died in 1918.
