The title spells the city "Pittsburg," the form in common use before the city officially adopted the "h" in 1911. The print was registered for copyright on May 16, 1896, by George F. Bain of Allegheny, Pennsylvania, a photographer whose studio across the Allegheny River from Pittsburgh produced many team and civic portraits in the 1890s. The Pittsburgh club was then a member of the National League, and group portraits like this one were often sold to fans and newspapers, so they capture how teams presented themselves to the public during the decade.
