Shown in bust profile and turned to the left, this engraving presents Thomas Jefferson in the stately side view that printmakers often favored for presidential likenesses. The plate is credited to H.B. Hall and is noted as possibly after a painting by Gilbert Stuart, though the caption card is undated and that attribution is unconfirmed. Stuart's portraits of Jefferson from the early 1800s were widely copied, so engravers across the young republic relied on them to produce recognizable images of the third president.
