A cider press, shown here as the object itself rather than a scene around it, belongs to a long farm tradition in which apples were pressed by hand or with a screw-and-beam mechanism into juice that was fermented in barrels. Presses like this were a common fixture on orchards and in farmhouses across the eastern United States well into the nineteenth century, when hard cider was an everyday drink and a standard part of farm labor at harvest. The picture is worth a close look for its wooden construction and the way the mechanism bears the weight of the pressing, details that show how little the basic design changed over generations.
