Few wartime posters speak so directly to sailors as this 1915 Canadian lithograph, which asks men to join the navy at a time when the Royal Canadian Navy was small and needed recruits. Its subject list includes the crow's nest, the lookout perch high on a mast, which points to the watchful, elevated duty the poster was selling. Before 1914 the navy was a modest force, and it grew during the war as Canada took on a larger role in the Atlantic. Posters like this one used bold color and a blunt slogan to appeal to young men who might otherwise have looked to the army.
