Few posters of the period speak to teenagers as directly as this one, which warns that syphilis is spread largely by young people. Its caption cites a half-million reported cases of early syphilis in the United States in a single year, about 100,000 of them in people under 19 and 13,000 between the ages of 11 and 15. Dated 1936 and sponsored by the New York City Department of Correction, it is a silkscreen print from the Works Progress Administration's federal art program, which employed artists to make public health posters during the Depression. Its blunt statistics reflect an era when venereal disease was discussed openly in campaigns urging testing and treatment.
