A Christmas Eve cartoon from 1932 that casts Franklin D. Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover alongside "John Q. Public," the stock figure for the average citizen. It was drawn during a political lull: Roosevelt had won the November 1932 election, but Hoover remained in office until March 1933, and that awkward transition, amid the Great Depression, gave editorial cartoonists plenty to comment on over the holidays. The record notes it was probably published in the Washington Star, a Washington daily that ran a good deal of political commentary. Holiday cartoons like this one often used the season's familiar imagery to comment on the national mood.
