Deposited for U.S. copyright in September 1892, this print shows Christmas Eve as its maker imagined it in the colonial past, a subject that drew steady interest in the late nineteenth century as Americans looked back to their origins. The record links the work to a James S. King through a shelflist card, though that attribution is unverified. Colonial Christmas customs varied widely by region: Puritan New England had discouraged holiday observance for much of the seventeenth century, while Dutch and English settlements elsewhere kept more festive traditions. Images like this one helped shape the cozy, hearth-centered Christmas that became familiar in American culture.
