A Christmas Eve cartoon from December 1932 places Franklin D. Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover beside John Q. Public, the everyman figure cartoonists used for ordinary citizens. Roosevelt had defeated Hoover in the November election, so the drawing captures a country waiting out the long interval before the new administration took office in March 1933. Holiday cartoons of the Depression years often used seasonal scenes to comment on hard times, and this one was probably published in the Washington Star. Its title and its three figures suggest the cartoonist was making a point about who would carry the nation's burdens into the new year.
