Though the record names a view, the image cannot be made out on this small silvered copper plate, so the only surviving identification is the handwritten label, "A view in 1843," attributed to W.Y. McAllister. Daguerreotypes of this period were made on mirror-polished silver surfaces that can look blank or reflective when the image has faded or was never clear, and this one was sealed behind glass in a case with a paper mat. The location of the view is unidentified, so the scene itself is lost to us. What remains is the object's format and presentation, which show how 1840s makers packaged and labeled their work.
