A crumpled automobile, caught in a glass negative from the early 1920s, is the subject here, and the record gives no location or cause for the crash. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, documented the city's streets, events and everyday life, and by the early 1920s automobile accidents had become a common news subject as cars spread across American roads. The negative's 8 by 6 inch format was typical of the period's commercial work. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original coating, which affects how the image reads today.
