Christmas, as the title says, is the subject here, and the picture belongs to a long run of holiday images. Christmas imagery took a recognizable shape in the nineteenth century, when printed cards, illustrated magazines and family papers spread a common set of motifs: evergreen boughs, candlelight, gift-giving and gathered households. Pictures like this were often meant to show domestic warmth and tradition more than a single event. It is worth looking for those familiar elements and asking what they say about how people wanted the season to be seen.
