Two figures stroll along the shoreline in the glow of a low sun, while cattle wade into the water to drink at the edge of the lake. The pairing of courting couples with working livestock is a familiar motif in late nineteenth and early twentieth century pastoral painting and print, where rural calm was often offered as a setting for romance. Notice how the long shadows and soft reflections on the water do most of the work of setting the mood, leaving the cattle as a quiet, grounded counterpoint to the sentiment of the scene.
