Costumed figures in masks are what set this glass negative apart from the board's usual turkey-and-table scenes. Made around 1910 to 1915 by Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news and feature photographs to newspapers, it records a custom more often associated with Halloween or the New Year than with the harvest holiday. Masking and mumming traditions, carried over from older European customs, let neighbors play at being someone else for a while. The 5 x 7 inch glass plate format was a common size for the agency's work of that era.
