This wood engraving shows a Christmas scene in a home for the poor, a subject that Harper's Weekly and other illustrated papers of the 1870s often used to draw readers' attention to charity during the holidays. Wood engraving was the main way newspapers and weeklies reproduced drawings before halftone photography became common, so the image reflects the work of an artist who drew the scene and an engraver who cut it into a block for printing. Its appearance in a national weekly suggests it was meant to prompt sympathy and giving among middle-class readers. Looking closely at the details of the room and the people in it shows how such pictures presented poverty and seasonal kindness to the public of the period.
