Bimbo of Bombay was billed as a magical musical comedy, and the poster's subject headings point to its draws: levitation, stage magic, and performers portraying East Indian and African American characters. The black-and-white lithograph was printed in 1897 by the H.C. Miner Litho. Co. of New York, one of the busy commercial houses that produced theatrical advertising for touring shows. Its portrayals reflect the racial stereotypes common in late nineteenth-century American entertainment, and they are worth viewing with that context in mind.
