Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower stand together at Castelvetrano in Sicily on December 14, 1943, where American forces were based after the island campaign. The photograph was taken during Roosevelt's wartime trip to North Africa and the Mediterranean that month, a journey that took him to meet troops before he continued on to the Cairo and Tehran conferences with Allied leaders. Eisenhower, then Supreme Allied Commander in the Mediterranean, was the officer responsible for the president's visit to the theater. This is Franklin, not Theodore Roosevelt, whose presidency ended in 1909.
