The name on this negative, Belle North, comes from caption information the Bain News Service recorded itself. The record gives no verified date or further identification, so the sitter's identity should be treated as provisional. George Grantham Bain founded the Bain News Service in New York around 1899 as a picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines. Its glass negatives, usually 5 by 7 inches or smaller, show stage performers, public figures, athletes and city life, and the caption cards that accompanied them are often the best clue to who was photographed and when.
