Columned porches like the one in this view were a signature of the Federal and Greek Revival houses that lined the streets of southeastern Massachusetts through the first half of the 1800s. Builders drew on classical temple fronts, using square or round wooden columns to carry a shallow roof and give an ordinary dwelling the look of civic dignity. Many of these houses were built by merchants and sea captains whose fortunes came from shipping, fishing, and the textile and iron trades of the region. The porch is worth a close look: its proportions and the crisp detailing at the capitals show how carpenters translated stone-building ideas into painted wood.
