A cannon on a wooden gun carriage is the subject of this black and white photograph, and the carriage deserves a close look. Wooden carriages with large spoked wheels were the standard way to move and aim heavy guns through much of the 1800s, and harbor forts and militia companies along the coast depended on them. Many towns later placed retired guns like this one on village greens or beside memorials, where they became local landmarks. Look at the wheels, the trail beneath the barrel and the weathering on the wood, which often shows how long a piece sat outdoors.
