Wellesley College, in the Massachusetts village of Wellesley west of Boston, is the subject of this Harper's New Monthly Magazine page from the years after the school opened. Henry Fowle Durant founded the college in 1870 on a rural estate beside Lake Waban, and it admitted its first class of several hundred women in 1875. Massachusetts in those decades was full of mill and shoe-making towns, and Wellesley drew national attention as a bold experiment in giving women the same rigorous study offered at older men's colleges. Magazine readers across the Northeast would have seen the campus as a model of an orderly, landscaped retreat devoted to learning. The lodge in the engraving reflects the wooded, lakeside setting the founders promoted.
