Ada Jones was one of the most recorded singers of the early phonograph era, and this portrait is a rare visual record of a performer who is usually known only through her voice. She sang popular songs and comic numbers on cylinders and discs, often in duets with Billy Murray, and her recordings sold widely in the 1900s and 1910s. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, made most of the glass negatives in this collection, so the picture likely reflects the commercial portrait work the agency produced for newspapers and magazines. The catalog's title and identification come from caption information the agency recorded, which has not been independently verified.
