Few posters from the Federal theater Project pair a serious American drama with puppets, which sets this 1937 silkscreen for *The Emperor Jones* apart. Eugene O'Neill's 1920 play follows Brutus Jones, a former Pullman porter who crowns himself emperor of a Caribbean island, then flees into the forest as drumbeats close in on him. Staging that story with the Ralph Chesses Marionettes was an unexpected choice for a production sponsored by the federal theater program, which employed artists during the Great Depression and brought live performance to audiences across the country.
