A marionette production of Dickens's A Christmas Carol is the subject here, staged in Boston in 1936 by the Federal theater Project, a New Deal program under the Works Progress Administration (later renamed the Work Projects Administration). The Federal theater Project employed out-of-work actors, writers and stagehands, and its puppet units were known for staging classic stories with inexpensive, handcrafted figures. This silkscreen poster was produced by the Federal Art Project, the WPA division for visual artists, and it reflects the period's habit of using bold flat color and simple shapes to advertise live entertainment to wide audiences.
