President Warren G. Harding, automaker Henry Ford, and inventor Thomas A. Edison appear together at this camping party, photographed around 1921 by Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for stereographs and press pictures. The informal setting shows a side of these public figures that formal portraits rarely captured. Ford and Edison had been close friends since the 1910s, and their outdoor getaways, which often included tire magnate Harvey Firestone and naturalist John Burroughs, became known as the Vagabonds' trips. Harding's presence shows how such leisure gatherings had moved into national public life.
