A winter sports poster for the Grand Hotel in St. Moritz, the Engadine resort that helped turn Alpine skiing into a fashionable pastime. Published in Milan in 1920, the lithograph uses bold color to link the hotel with skiers and the snowy slopes around it. Swiss resorts were at that time promoting winter holidays to visitors from across Europe, and posters like this one were a major way of reaching them. Look at how the design makes the snow and the sport feel inviting, a sales pitch that was as much about atmosphere as about the hotel itself.
