Crossing the Hudson between Nyack on the western shore and Tarrytown on the eastern, this ferry linked two river towns that had no bridge between them for much of the twentieth century. Ferries like this one carried commuters, farm goods, and automobiles across the river, and until the Tappan Zee Bridge opened in 1955, they were a vital part of daily travel in the lower Hudson Valley. The photograph, made around 1921, shows the working river of that era, when ferry traffic shared the water with other vessels.
