The title points to the fife-and-drum tradition of the American Revolution, when fifers and drummers gave the army its signals in camp and on the field. "Yankee Doodle" was a tune soldiers and loyalists alike knew well, and it became a favorite of the Continental side, though the British were said to have mocked it first. Pictures like this one, which show musicians marching into battle, were often painted or printed long after 1776, when the Revolution had taken on a patriotic glow. Worth noticing is how the musicians, boys in many units, stand in the middle of the action rather than off to the side.
