The title sends a figure in a jaunty rhyme "riding on a pony" into town for a "Glorious Fourth," a nod to the old song "Yankee Doodle." The British army reportedly sang the tune to mock colonial militiamen in the 1750s, but American soldiers took it up during the Revolution and it became a patriotic favorite. By the 19th century, the Fourth of July was one of the main occasions for parades, speeches and public celebration, and printmakers often used the song's lighthearted character to picture the holiday for a broad audience.
