Few details survive about the men pictured here, so the image rests mostly on its setting: a group of sailors posed together, a theme that turns up often on steamboat-era boards. Photographs like this one were typically made on or near the docks, when crews stood for a portrait before or after a run. Steamboats carried passengers and freight along American rivers through the 19th century, and their deckhands, firemen and pilots formed a working community that rarely appears in the official records. Pictures of crews like this one help show who actually kept those boats running.
