Titled in both English and German, this color lithograph comes from R.J. Stock of Cincinnati, Ohio, and its title sets up a stark moral choice between the road to Heaven and the road to Hell. Cincinnati had a large German-speaking population in the 1890s, and the bilingual title suggests the print was meant for households that read German as well as English. Its U.S. Copyright Office registration places it among the inexpensive religious images that circulated in American homes and Sunday schools at the end of the nineteenth century.
