Alexander Winton, the Scottish-born bicycle builder who founded the Winton Motor Carriage Company in Cleveland, is the man at the wheel here, shown driving his automobile on a racetrack around 1901. Early automobile makers relied on racing to prove their cars' speed and endurance to a skeptical public, and Winton was among the most visible competitors of the period. The open cars, exposed seating, and rough, unpaved or cinder-surfaced tracks of the era make this a useful glimpse of how dangerous and experimental motor sport was before paved speedways existed.
