This stereograph shows the Conemaugh Valley from South Fork, the town upstream where the South Fork Dam gave way on May 31, 1889. The breach sent a wall of water down the valley into Johnstown, killing roughly 2,200 people. Niagara Falls photographer George Barker issued the card soon after the disaster, when many Americans wanted to see the devastated landscape. Viewed through a stereoscope, the paired images gave viewers a sense of depth that a flat print could not.
