Its headline, "Missing!", is addressed directly to the nurses of the British Red Cross who died when hospital ships were sunk by German submarines, a theme that set it apart from the recruiting and war-loan posters of the time. The printed verse casts these women as martyrs whose sacrifice at sea earns them a place among the honored dead. Printed in 1918, in the last months of the war, the poster reflects how the loss of medical ships and their staff had become a public grievance in Britain. Hospital ships were meant to be protected under international conventions, so their sinking by U-boats was widely denounced, and posters like this one used such losses to sustain public anger and support for the war effort.
