A million people, the poster declares, have already learned the Red Cross way of cheating death from accidents, and this 1919 halftone is built around that bold claim. The American Red Cross ran large first aid instruction programs during and after the First World War, teaching civilians emergency care at a time when its wartime work had made first aid a familiar idea. Presented as a poster, the message framed first aid training as a practical duty for everyday life, not only a wartime one. Its blunt wording and direct appeal reflect the style of the many American posters that circulated in the late 1910s.
