In 1857, the German settlements of the Texas Hill Country, often called the Old Colonies, were about a decade old and still shaped by the Adelsverein, the German nobles' society that had founded New Braunfels in 1845 and Fredericksburg in 1846. The society had collapsed financially by the early 1850s, so by this date the colonists were working their own land, many of them farming corn, wheat, and vegetables and raising cattle, sheep, and goats on the limestone hills. New Braunfels, on the Comal River, had mills, shops, and a German-language press, and its residents took pride in the schools, singing societies, and churches they had built. The map's sweeping view of these scattered towns and farmsteads shows a region still tied to its German origins, with roads and river crossings that linked small communities to the wider Texas frontier.
