Texas in 1857 was a fast-growing cotton state, its population swelled by settlers arriving since annexation in 1845, and enslaved Black Texans performed much of the field labor on the eastern and river-bottom plantations. Galveston was the main export port, shipping cotton through its harbor, while the first railroads were pushing inland from Houston and remained short lines. German immigrants in the Hill Country, around New Braunfels and Fredericksburg, farmed and ran small businesses in towns that kept their language and churches. Pressler's 1857 map of the state reflects a Texas still defining its western frontier, where federal forts guarded settlers against raids by Comanche and other Plains peoples.
