A church in the East Prussian town of Neidenburg, now Nidzica in Poland, is the subject, and the caption credits its ruin to Russian troops. The town lay near the battlefields of Tannenberg, where Russian and German armies clashed in late August 1914, and it changed hands during the first weeks of the war. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs, supplied this title, but the record marks it as unverified, so the cause of the damage is best read as the caption's claim rather than settled fact. The picture still shows how wartime photographs of the Eastern Front presented destruction in East Prussia as the work of the enemy.
