The French Market in New Orleans is the subject here, a commercial district that had been trading along the Mississippi riverfront for well over a century by the time this glass negative was made around 1900. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced and sold views of American places in that period, catalogued it as a street and market scene, and the subjects listed for it point to the mix of stalls and the neighborhoods that supplied them. Large 8 by 10 inch glass plates like this one captured fine detail, so the stalls, goods and crowds of the market's working days survive with a clarity that smaller formats often lost.
