The caption on this color lithograph, "The moment the order came to go forward," casts the call to enlist as a scene of soldiers at a pause, and the pipe-smoking subject heading adds a homely touch that suggests camaraderie as much as combat. Issued by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in 1915, it belongs to the wave of British campaigns from the early war years, when voluntary enlistment was still the main way to raise the army. Its friendly address, "Come along, boys!", was typical of posters that tried to make service look like a shared undertaking.
