Among the Lincoln portraits in this group, this one is a daguerreotype, a direct positive made on a silver-coated copper plate and kept in a hinged leather case. The mirror-like surface shows the image only when tilted into the light, and the case protected that fragile plate from scratches and tarnish. Daguerreotypes were the leading portrait process in the 1840s and 1850s, before cheaper paper prints took over, and they remain some of the sharpest surviving photographs of nineteenth-century sitters. The record does not name the photographer or the sitting date, so the picture is best read as an example of how Lincoln's contemporaries were recorded in this early medium.
