Little is recorded about this scene beyond its caption, "Connecticut Saluting," written on the Bain News Service negative or its caption card. The image is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of roughly 40,000 news photographs that Bain's agency sent to newspapers in New York and beyond from about 1900 to 1915. Because the title came from unverified agency data, the exact occasion and the men or units shown are unknown. Still, the picture reflects the agency's habit of documenting ceremonies and public gatherings of the early twentieth century, when saluting was a common gesture at parades and military events.
