Little beyond the single word "Submarine" and the date, October 14, 1912, survives on this glass negative. The record notes that the title came from unverified Bain News Service labels, so the exact vessel and place remain uncertain. In 1912 the submarine was still a fairly new kind of warship, and the United States and European navies were building and testing these boats, which made them a steady subject for news photographers. The Bain agency, based in New York, sold pictures like this to newspapers eager to show readers the new technology changing naval power.
