Concrete lock walls and massive steel gates fill this wide view, a scale of engineering that defined the era's largest public works. Locks like these are most closely associated with the Panama Canal, which Theodore Roosevelt pushed forward after the United States secured rights to the route in 1903. Construction began in 1904 under his administration, and the canal's concrete locks, which raised and lowered ships between ocean levels, became some of the most ambitious engineering of the early twentieth century. Roosevelt left office in 1909, before the canal opened in 1914, but his push made the project possible.
