Despite the board placement, this view shows the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone in northwestern Wyoming, not the canyon in Arizona. Its yellow and rust-colored walls were carved by the Yellowstone River, and the scene belongs to the 1871 Yellowstone series made during the Hayden Geological Survey. Survey members and artists recorded the region's geysers, falls, and canyons during that expedition. Their images helped persuade Congress to set Yellowstone aside as the first national park in 1872.
