The subject here is a towering wall of rock rising directly above the Colorado River, the kind of sheer face that defines the inner gorge of the Grand Canyon. Photographs of this type date largely from the 1870s, when federal survey parties and river expeditions, including those led by John Wesley Powell, first brought images of the canyon's interior to eastern audiences. Because the camera required long exposures and heavy equipment, photographers had to haul their gear by boat and on foot, which makes these views both a record of the landscape and of the difficulty of recording it. Notice how the scale of the wall dwarfs any human presence, a quality that helped convince the public that the canyon deserved protection.
