Few posters from the federal WPA art program speak as bluntly about a private illness as this one, which warns that shame may be fatal and urges anyone who suspects syphilis to see a doctor instead of hiding it. Designed in 1936 by the artist Alex Kallenberg and sponsored by the New York City Department of Correction, it reflects the Depression-era public health campaigns that aimed to bring venereal disease out of silence and into treatment. A later date stamp on the back, December 1937, shows the print was in use or on file about a year after it was made.
