Few portraits in this group show a naval officer in profile, and this bust of Commodore George Henry Preble faces left, a pose that gives the sitter a formal, composed look. Preble (1816-1885) spent most of his career in the U.S. Navy, rising through the ranks during the decades before and after the Civil War. He was also a historian who wrote a well-regarded history of the American flag, published in 1880. The caption card records no date, so the photograph's exact year is unknown, but its style fits the later nineteenth century.
