The only identifying detail in this record is the title "Pell," a name taken from caption cards and negative sleeves that the Bain News Service wrote without verification, so the sitter or subject is still uncertain. Bain operated a New York news photo service in the early twentieth century, selling pictures of public figures, events, and everyday news to newspapers. Its images were made on glass negatives, which were fragile and prone to breakage, so surviving examples like this one are valuable records of that working news operation.
